Bits and Pieces

  Fuji Superia 200 Film

These are just some photos I snapped while on a walk with a friend and the baby. I'm getting tired of this film (it comes in a 4-pack!). I can't wait to post more pictures from the new film that I got. Might be a while, though, or at least until I find a photo processing place that I like over here (we're out of town!).

Midcentury Modern Homes

I like taking pictures in our neighborhood on weekday mornings when there are no cars to indicate what decade we're in.

Also, is anyone else really sad that Mad Men is over?

Dolores Park

Monday, May 04, 2015

About a month ago, we celebrated one of my best friend's birthday by going on a picnic at Dolores Park. The weather kept changing from sunny to gloomy, but we're just glad it didn't start raining like it did earlier in the day.

We decided to BART to the park from our place but ended up having to make a huge detour because the train had to be evacuated. We were pretty much stranded with a baby and no car seat, but thankfully we found a Muni line that ran from where we were straight to the top of the park! When we got there, there were sandwiches waiting for us and all was well :)

This genius was selling rum in fresh coconuts!

Downtown SF

A few weeks ago, we took an empty Bart train downtown and walked around. Here are some photos I took on film:

A Day at Home

Monday, March 30, 2015

The best days are the ones spent at home. We get to make baby crescents, play in the backyard, and count pinecones.

Going to the SF Zoo

Monday, March 30, 2015

Some pictures from when we went to the zoo a few weeks ago. All taken on 35mm film.

These flamingos looked pretty but smelled yucky.

One day, he'll be old enough for this:

Taiwan Day 1

Monday, January 19, 2015

We arrived in Taipei on Saturday, December 27th in the late afternoon. By the time we got to my Aunt's house, it was already dinner time. For dinner we got 薑母鴨 to go and ate it at home. It's a ginger duck soup base that you can use for hotpot and is only available during the winter months. The broth is made of duck pieces seared with hot oil and ginger, and then boiled in rice wine saturated with Chinese herbs, roots, and berries:

Day 1
Our first morning, and every morning afterwards, we'd get Taiwanese breakfast at different breakfast places around my aunt's neighborhood.

This is a popular chain, 永和豆漿 where we went most of the time. The first day, we went crazy and got enough food for a dozen people but it was helpful for us to try everything and to figure out what we wanted to eat in the following days:

This is a vegetable garden across from where we were staying:

Later that day, we had lunch with my two uncles and aunt from my dad's side of the family. We ate at a traditional Taiwanese food restaurant and sat around and chatted at their house afterwards. Later that night, we had dinner at Addiction Aquatic Development (which is a giant fresh fish and seafood market) with my maternal uncle's family and had an enormous Hokkaido snow crab that was super delicious. So delicious that I can never eat crab again in my life and be satisfied. You know that feeling you get when you spend all this time cracking crab legs and all you get is a small amount of meat out that leaves you pretty unsatisfied? Well, not this crab. This crab leg was the length of my entire arm and the meat came out so easily that I actually got full off of one leg. To say that it was amazing is probably not enough but it truly was amazing.

11 months and 2 days old

Film: Fujicolor Natura 1600

Mars is 11 months and 2 days old.

It's been a while since I posted one of these weekly updates. Mars has grown so much already since the last one. Lately, he has been making a lot of new sounds like, "deeka deeka dika" and just now, he was saying, "maaaaa maaaaa maaaa maaa" really slowly to make bubbles on his lips. He got a kick out of the latter and cracked himself up :)

He's also been able to clap and shake his head for a while, but in the past few weeks, he's also been doing the, "more please" sign. Only on occasion will he do his signs on command, but when he does, he knows, "clap" in Chinese and English!

I started shooting with 35mm film again! I've always loved shooting with film, and yesterday, when I got my first three rolls processed, I got all giddy and excited to pop the CD into my computer to see what I've captured. Just like old times!

The pictures above were taken in December with an expensive film that I've tried to experiment with numerous times, but have never quite been able to master. I still have a few rolls of this stuff left but I've given up and don't think I'll be using it anymore. It's supposed to be best for night shots, but even with a fast camera, those photos don't come out very well either :( Please excuse the grain!
